“We know through the Church that we must take more care of the soul than of the body, but do we love this truth?  Understand, believe it?  Hope in it?  We do not.  When we do, no one can stop us from having a culture—for beauty is a necessity to deep religious experience.”

—from the essay “The Appreciation and Creation of Beauty” (1932)

  1. I often wonder why I’ve kept my faith when so many of my friends – even religious – have lost it, when I’m no better than they. As far as I can tell it was the aesthetic experiences I was exposed to thanks to John and Louise Schmitt.

  2. David – Thanks so much for your thoughts.

This really gets at the heart of what my grandfather was all about (and by extension what we’re trying to do here at the Foundation). We often think of the Faith as a matter of the intellect, and of course that’s indispensable. But no one can live the Faith just on an intellectual level. It needs an ethos – the beauty, fascination, and wonder that captures the heart. You might call it a “personal culture” which supports a relationship of love. So it sounds like you “plugged into” this via what you were exposed to by my own parents. I’m grateful as well.
