Carl Schmitt’s wife Gertrude and his brother Robert enjoy the view from the back of Robert’s house in Silvermine in this photograph from the 1920s. The images shows just how open Silvermine – now covered almost entirely with dense woods – was at that time. One resident has written, “From the church spires of New Canaan to the west one could see all the way to the silver ribbon of the Sound and the misty outline of Long Island to the south.” (photograph from the Carl Schmitt Foundation archives on page 16 of Silvermine.)

Through dozens of vintage photographs the new book tells the fascinating history of Silvermine—the hamlet Carl Schmitt called home for 70 years—and its rich social, artistic, and cultural life during the heyday of the artists’ colony in the first half of the last century.

  1. Hi Sam: I wanted you to know how much I LOVED the book. I ordered it last week and basically read the whole book cover to cover in one night. It was fascinating! As a child I knew bits and pieces about Silvermine but now I know so much more. Many pictures triggered memories of walks or playing when visiting my grandparents. What a beautiful book you have written; it was a look in the past to a wonderful era that you have preserved through your research and photos. I just loved it and I hope everyone else does too. God bless you and all you do to keep so many wonderful memories of Mano and Grandpop so alive. I also saw in the book their original house and realized it was the same one that is in the pastel I have that he gave me as a wedding gift and now I know so much more about it. Thank you for that. Have a beautiful Christmas with your family. Lots of love your cousin Marianne (Austins daughter) 🙂
