Wisdom on Wednesdays—Stronger than my curiosity

“If I find men who don’t make sense
I must understand them
I must not be frightened by them.
That is, I must not hate them.
If I say ‘This man is crazy’
I mean that I don’t understand him.
And if I am frightened by him, I hate him
(How stupid to hate a crazy man)
I must understand a crazy man
I must love a crazy man.
My curiosity must be stronger than my fright.
And my Christianity must be stronger than my curiosity.”  (1935)
